Munich’s giant flea market - Munich, GERMANY
Once a year on the opening weekend of the Munich “Frühlingsfest” (the first Saturday of the Spring Festival of Munich, in April) there is a very large flea market on the Theresienwiese – the grounds where the famous Oktoberfest takes place some months later.
This truly gigantic flea market, which brings together every year around 3,000 exhibitors and above a million visitors from all over Europe, for a one festive day of flea market sales in the Theresienwiese, constitutes an amazing opportunity for flea market and thrifting enthusiasts, to find great second-hand goods at a very low price (if you follow at least some of the recommendations we shared in our post “The Art Of Flea Market Haggling”). Clothe, design furniture, flea market merchandise, militaria, home appliances, electronic, antiques, etc. are at the reach of any budget!
Have a look at our 2010 review of the flea market if you want to have a more in depth overview of this event. We also shared some pictures for the very pleasure of your eyes. More about Munich’s Giant Flea Market
Useful information for exhibitors
muenchen.de made a few FAQs available (content in German only) on its website, to to all potential vendors who wish to sell at the Riesenflohmarkt Frühlingsfest: http://www.muenchen.de/veranstaltungen/event/9878.html
Basically, it explains that it is not necessary (nor possible) to book a stall or space in advance: the motto “first come first served” applies. In any case, stalls must be set up at 06:00 a.m. on Saturday at the latest (you can start assembling your booth the day before, on Friday from 4.00 p.m.). According to BRK (the organizers), all products which “are common in a household or have been accumulated at home over time” may be sold at the flea market. Goods that can’t be sold at the flea market include new goods, wholesale furniture, motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts, food products, animals, plants, war toys and weapons, violent or pornographic magazines and movies.
Cost for exhibitors: The basic price is €15 per stall for the whole day (base price calculated on the size of a trestle table). Otherwise, the service fee is calculated according to the occupied area: each additional square meter costs €5.
